A COMMITTEE OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF STRATFORD CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
Agriculture Project-update 2023
Launched in January 2019, COMMIT’s agriculture project in Nandarola has been an outstanding success. Initially involving 10 farmers under the guidance of a hired agronomist, the initiative has since expanded to include 27 active members. During a recent visit, COMMIT met with farmers who proudly showcased their achievements. In addition to family plots, they have cultivated a large field of corn and beans, yielding abundant and successful crops. Some team members even trekked the challenging terrain to visit the top of the hill where the farming takes place.
Two farmers in the village have also ventured into bee hive production, sharing their experiences of both challenges and successes.
Graham and Richard discussed the potential for expanding the projects, including adding more worm boxes to farmers already using them. The farmers expressed satisfaction with the knowledge gained from the agronomist and remain committed to improving their gardens and plots. COMMIT will continue to support these efforts, fostering sustainable agriculture and self-sufficiency.
Our team held a memorial together with the farmers of Nandarola to honour Pat Feryn who had recently passed away. Pat and Jane were instrumental in getting the Agriculture Project started in the village of Nandarola. He will be greatly missed.
