Nandaime

Nandaime is a small town in the southwestern part of Nicaragua. You will find it off the Panamerican highway, in the Pacific area of Nicaragua, 67km from Managua, the capital of the Republic, and 20 kilometers from Granada, the departmental capital.  The city was founded on October 29, 1890.

Nandaime, a municipality of inexhaustible history, of simple, friendly and hospitable people, will make you feel at home. This is a city that inspired poets, writers, businessmen and musicians who made Nandaime their home.

The name "Nandaime", a word in the Chorotega language, means "Place of abundant streams", which indicates that the lands are fertile, well used by the inhabitants for the development of agriculture.

This city is home to over 42 thousand people, all serviced by one hospital, Nandaime Hospital, which also serves the surrounding 73 villages.

We came to know this town ten years ago when COMMIT visited the Nandaime hospital and Maternity house to bring donations. It is close to where our team stays every year and we have been able to form a friendship and bond with the mayor, working closely with him and the projects that he has requested support with.

Hospital Support

This quaint little hospital serves such a large area, that often resources are a challenge. The hospital sends brigades to the various villages to check up on the people, as well as to keep the immunizations up to date. The hospital staff are lovely and very competent in their work, working with and and making do with what they have available.

COMMIT has supported the Nandaime hospital for the past 10 years through donations brought via shipping containers and monetary donations for much needed medical supplies. Sometimes our donations have come, right when they have used the last of their supplies. What a blessing to be able to help these hard working people.

We also work in close conjunction with the director of the hospital, helping with any needs that the villages may have. This year we were asked to furnish two doctor's rooms so that the doctors can stay out in the remote villages that they are seeing patients in. We also gave a monetary donation towards the building of a medical center in the village of Camerone's 2, which is almost a two hour drive from the hospital.

Labour and Delivery beds for Nandaime and Rivas hospital

Shown here is one of the beautiful delivery beds donated by Hill Rom Canada. Thanks so much for your generous donation. We were honoured to be able to show the staff how to work the bed, which replaced the bench that was used before. This will make the delivery process so much easier for both the patients and the staff working in Labour and Delivery. The hospital staff and patients were thrilled with this upgrade to their delivery room.

Masks and PPE during Covid

COMMIT provided the Nandaime hospital with much needed surgical and N95 masks to protect them from covid19. Thanks to our many donors for making this possible.

During COVID COMMIT was able to supply the hospital with much needed gowns, masks and shields. We also purchased blood pressure monitors, thermometers and sat monitors so that the twenty teams made up of a doctor and nurse, that visited patients in the villages, would be properly outfitted and able to assess.  During COVID the hospitals were overrun with patients, not unlike in Canada, so the brigades that were able to care for and assess the sick in the villages were a huge blessing. Any patient that was found to be seriously ill was then moved to the nearest hospital for treatment.

ECG machine for Nandaime Hospital

COMMIT was able to donate an ECG machine to the Nandaime hospital for diagnostic testing. The staff at the hospital are very competent but lack the resources and equipment. The donation made by someone in Canada has improved the hospital's ability to treat and diagnose patients, what a blessing. This year they also received an ultrasound machine which was much needed, especially for their antenatal patients.
