COMMIT was born after a team of dedicated volunteers mostly from the medical field in Southwestern Ontario, ventured into the second poorest country in Central America, Nicaragua 9 years ago.

Our mission statement is to offer our services to remote communities in the municipality of Nandaime on a longterm basis.

We conduct pop-up medical clinics, drill water wells to produce clean water, research and implement healthier options of sanitation, introduce sustainable agricultural practices as well as enhance and support educational and social programs. Presently we are working on an eco-friendly stove project to provide a healthier way to cook, combined with reforestation for the environment.  COMMIT has also participated in two builds so far- a community house and a medical facility.

Each year, we invite any individual  who expresses an interest in assisting us in-country to form a team and work toward these goals. We work cooperatively with the local governments, hospitals and nationals, with the support of the international committee of the Rotary Clubs of Stratford in Canada and Granada in Nicaragua.

Our partnership is further strengthened by the involvement of a local home for children, called Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, (NPH) which means “our little brothers and sisters” in Spanish. The young adults from the NPH home have served as

  • translators

  • labourers for setting up and tearing down clinic sites,

  • organizers and sorters of donated items.

Students in university from the home as well as the Nandaime area who are studying in the medical field also have the opportunity to

  • register clinic attendees

  • educate people on proper dental practices, hand washing

  • administer blood pressure checks

  • take temperatures and urine samples from patients

  • receive mentorship from our team doctors

COMMIT promotes microeconomics as we encourage self-sufficiency and empowerment by fully including residents in local fund-raising and community endeavours.
